I was born and raised raised in the community of little village. In my neighborhood I would say is mostly Mexicans. “88 percent of Latinos in little village community area.” We do, in fact, have a lot of problems with immigration here. Population (2010) 98,551 down 1% from 2000 Racial/ethnic makeup (2010) 88% Latino, 5% white, 4% African American Around March 2016 there was rumors saying that ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was coming to people’s doors. Knowing your rights is very important. I know for many undocumented people it’s scary to say things to police because you know you don’t have papers. You still have the right to ask if they have a warrant etc. I know various people who have been stopped by the police for no reason. In my opinion they were only stopped because they were Mexican. There has been times when my dad has been stopped for no reason. My dad has gave money to the cops just so that they can let him go. For what? Just so that they won’t put him in jail. He does this because he knows he has a family to provide for because and he can be sent back to Mexico. This demonstrates how corrupt the United States is but also the Chicago police department. A lot of undocumented people don’t know their rights which is a very big problem not only in my neighborhood, but in Chicago and around the whole world. We have to start knowing the rights we have. In my community we have an organization called enlace. Enlace helps undocumented people find ways to get scholarships to go to college, helps them get permits to work etc. this is not only for students but is also for anyone that is undocumented. Students can partner with enlace go to places and inform people about the rights that they have. Also there are lawyers that they can refer people to that know about laws more. I know for sure not everyone knows about enlace and how they can help out everyone who needs it.
